Spotlight on the Stars: Get to Know Julia Meng

Posted on: April 5th, 2012 by jamie-melaragno

This is Julia’s ninth season with Ballet Nouveau Colorado. She trained with Maria Vegh, former director of the Harkness House in NYC, and also studied at the Joffrey Ballet and American Repertory Ballet. Before joining BNC, she danced with David Taylor Dance Theater, Boulder Ballet and Colorado Ballet. Favorite roles with BNC include Garrett Ammon’s When the Power Goes Out, No Passengers,  For The Love of Pete, and Sarah Tallman’s See Yourself.  Julia has also been featured in new works by Amy Seiwert, Alex Ketley, Robert Sher-Macherndal, Heather Maloy, Mark Godden and Lauri Stallings. She has also choreographed four works for BNC and has been a teacher at the School of BNC since 2002.

When did you start dancing and why?  When I was 5 years old. I have an older sister who use to dance and I wanted to do it too.

What do you love most about dance?  I love the way my body feels when it’s moving, streching, working. I especially love pieces that are physically challenging.

Which BNC production has been your favorite and why?  My favorite piece is ”No Passengers”.  I love the music and it was a lot of fun to create.

What do you do in your free time when you’re not dancing?  I have a 8 month old daughter so I don’t really have any “free time”.  When I’m not dancing I spend all my time with her and my husband.

Fun Facts

Favorite Color:  Blue

Favorite Food:  Pineapple fried rice!!!

Favorite Quote:  “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be.” Mahatma Gandhi

One thing you can’t live without:  My daughter

Rock Ballets Questions:

What is your favorite rock song, and what does it mean to you?  Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matter’s “ -“forever trust in who we are, and nothing else matters…” It was the first time a song really struck me and I learned a lot about myself.  Tod’s “Aenema” helps me vent when I’m having a bad day.

What is your favorite song by David Bowie?  My Favorite is actually a Bowie/Queen collaboration… “Under Pressure”.

Square of Ice

Posted on: March 29th, 2012 by jamie-melaragno

On Saturday, March 31st at 10pm, Sarah Tallman and Colby Foss will be performing a pas de deux from Garrett Ammon's work, "Walk the Line" set to Johnny Cash's famous tune.  Why? Because Off-Center at The Jones (located in the Denver Performing Arts Complex) is hosting a 2 day festival entitled "Square of Ice - A Johnny Cash Remix."

This festival is a talent competition style format where acts will be performing their best Johnny Cash covers - everything from improv comics to ukelele players. The top 14 entries have been selected and will compete this coming Friday and Saturday evening; doors open at 9:30pm.

All of the entries will perform on Friday, followed by a live vote and a finalist showdown on Saturday the 31st.  Our dancers will be the opening entertainment for the showdown (think the guest performers on SYTYCD's results show).  Other entertainment on the 31st includes live ice carving outside of the theater and a closing performance by Rocky Mountain DanceGrass band Whitewater.

Come and enjoy the performers' Johnny Cash Remixes, and don't miss the beautiful dancing of Sarah Tallman and Colby Foss opening the show on March 31st!

Racing For Better Health

Posted on: March 27th, 2012 by joanna-maiolo

I am excited to announce BNC’s participation at the Frank Shorter RACE4Kids’ Health 5K race on April 15th, 2012, put together by Healthy Learning Paths. This organization shares many of BNC’s philosophies of integrating health and wellness and teaching healthy lifestyle choices to our students.

Healthy Learning Paths empowers children by teaching wellness strategies for success in health, learning, and life. They envision communities where integrated health and educational tools are broadly accessible to families of all backgrounds and income levels. These tools enable parents to effectively coach children as they navigate obstacles to achievement and good health. The final outcome is children acquire a natural and lasting determination to reach their full potentials.

Healthy Learning Paths is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

The Frank Shorter RACE4Kids' Health 5K honors Olympic Gold Medalist, Frank Shorter for his commitment to children's wellness and learning.  Proceeds benefit Healthy Learning Paths, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit partnership of medical and educational professionals, who recognize and teach the critical connections between health and learning for children's success. Your participation brings our Be Well, Learn Well© school wellness and educational community programs to more Colorado children.  Children must be well, so they can learn well.

Don't miss the Healthy Kids' Expo at the race where you'll find many resources, products and fun activities for kids. Also, be sure to stop by the BNC booth to find out more about our approach to healthy living!
