We want to thank everyone who was involved in the Nutcracker Tea, held on Nov. 20.  The Barre Committee, who is a group of dedicated BNC parent volunteers did an outstanding job!  With the help from all of you who attended, the in-kind donations of food, decorations and Barre Committee we raised over $3,000, which exceeded the fundraising goal which was $2,000. The event was such a sucess we will be doing one again next year.

BNC will host a 2-hour ballet class workshop with School Director Julia Wilkinson Manley and former professional dancer and Pilates Rehabilitation Specialist Camcie Foster on Friday, November 11, 4-6pm.

This class will provide students with a comprehensive education of muscle group dynamics and bio-mechanics of proper technique.

Julia will teach a BNC-style ballet class – kinesthetic corrections, classical foundation, contemporary sensibility – while Camcie will go further in-depth with descriptions of muscle group function and correct bio-mechanics. Participants, either student dancers or teachers, will be given the opportunity to explore in detail how better to achieve classical lines and improve technique when the body is functioning as a universal whole.

BNC's Student Company held their first Kids' Nite Out event of the year this past Saturday. Kids' Nite Out is a fundraiser hosted by the members of the Student Company. While parents enjoyed a night out, the kids also enjoyed a great time at BNC. Activities of the night included eating yummy (and healthy!) snacks, playing games, making crafts, getting tattoos at the temporary tattoo parlour and even getting their nails done! And since Halloween is right around the corner, costumes were a must! Be on the look out for more Kids' Nite Out events coming soon!

For a dancer, gaining and maintaining flexibility is very important. Flexibility is not something that can be achieved easily or quickly and is something you must constantly work on to retain. The truth of the matter is everyone’s bodies are different; some people are very flexible naturally, while others have never been able to achieve a middle split. Regardless of how naturally flexible you are or are not, here are some tips on how to work on your flexibility:

• To achieve optimum flexibility, stretching outside of classes at home on your own time is crucial.
• The most important part of stretching is making sure you’re warm first. If you’re at home, try doing 25 jumping jacks just prior to stretching. When you’re warm, your muscles are the most receptive to stretching and improvement, so do it while you're still sweaty!
• Don’t push yourself too hard, you don’t want to injure yourself over-stretching too fast. Most stretches should not be held longer than 30-45 seconds.
• Yoga and Pilates workouts, in addition to dance classes, can help with core strength and flexibility.
• Winter is on its way! Remember that when the weather is colder, it takes the body longer to warm up. Take care of your body and be sure to allow extra stretching and exercise time to be in great shape and help prevent injuries.
