I had the great pleasure of observing a [...]]]> In honor of Dance From the Heart, BNC’s annual event to support and build awareness for Community Outreach Programs on January 27th, here are the lives that have been affected by BNC.

Getting ready for a small performance

 Ballet Expressions is an adaptive dance class for students who have physical or developmental disabilities. I had the great pleasure of observing a Ballet Expressions class, taught by Heather Sutton, a registered movement therapist.  I am an intern at BNC and this class was one of the reasons I was interested in working for BNC because I am paralyzed from the waist down due to spinal cord injury and use a wheelchair. I would have jumped at the chance to be a part of a dance program had something like this been available when I was younger. For me, it was very moving and inspiring to see five girls, all with various levels of ability, expressing themselves, dancing together, and having fun. What’s great about this program is that it is tailored to the abilities of the students and they learn the same things and get the same benefits as a student in a normal ballet class. I am delighted that BNC has implemented the Ballet Expressions program, because it lets kids be creative, build their self-esteem, and more importantly, have a blast!
