Spotlight on Scholarship Students: Skyler

Posted on: May 10th, 2012 by sasha-galikeeva

When he was in fifth grade, Skyler caught the eye of BNC's School Director Julia Wilkinson-Manley during a BNC community outreach program, Teaching Math Through Dance. Shortly after this program, Skyler started dancing at BNC as a scholarship student. During his 5 years at BNC, Skyler has performed the part of Fritz and the Nutcracker Prince in The Nutcracker. Skyler's favorite part in The Nutcracker was the Prince because it "highlights his strong jumps and movements." Skyler is also a member of the student company.  In class, Skyler is learning to lift and carry the female dancers. Skyler loves showcasing his skills and competing. In fact, this year he won at the annual Denver Ballet Guild Competition. And he will be performing at Gala on June 2nd, and it "will be the best yet." In the future, Skyler plans to go to college to study dance and become a professional dancer and instructor some day.

You can see Skyler and the rest of the student company perform Madeline Stands Tall on May 12th. Tickets start at $10!

You can also help support BNC by sponsoring one of our scholarship students.  To learn more about this opportunity email BNC’s Executive Director, Christin Crampton Day, ccday@bncdance.com.

Spotlight on Scholarship Student: Nick

Posted on: May 9th, 2012 by sasha-galikeeva

Nick has been dancing for five years, since he was eight years old. His sister Momo also dances at BNC. Nick is a member of our student company as well as a scholarship student. He has performed in his all-time favorite show, The Nutcracker, for 4 years. During one of the four years, Nick played the part of Fritz. In addition to performing in The Nutcracker, Nick will also be performing many pieces at Gala in June. Nick will be performing in a variety of styles, including ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary. One of Nick’s favorite experiences so far at BNC was assisting in the Ballet Expressions adaptive dance class. This experience has influenced Nick’s plans to be "a physical therapist and a dance teacher."

Besides dancing, Nick also loves the feel of the wind blowing through his hair when he rides his bike.

You can see Nick and the rest of the student company perform Madeline Stands Tall on May 12th. Tickets start at $10!

Spotlight on Scholarship Students: Momo

Posted on: May 3rd, 2012 by sasha-galikeeva

If you were at Dance From the Heart in January, you saw Momo dance a lively, contemporary solo. As one of BNC's scholarship students, Momo is part of our student company performers and she has been dancing for 11 years, since she was four. At BNC, Momo loves being able to dance with all of her friends and to work with amazing teachers. She enjoys "performing everything." She performed in The Nutcracker this past December and she liked being able to dance on stage with the professional company. This June, at Gala, Momo will be performing pieces in a variety of styles, including ballet, modern, jazz, and contemporary.

When Momo isn't dancing she enjoys watching movies and she loves dogs.

Momo will be sharing the lead role of Madeline with her best friend, Kaileah and will also be dancing in The Garden, which will be part of the Madeline Stands Tall show. Momo's goal is to become a professional dancer with a contemporary ballet company, similar to BNC's company. "This opportunity to work with Ms. Dawn Fay (BNC's Associate Artistic Dir and the choreographer of The Garden) has been an amazing experience that has been like a dream come true! Her choreography is always very new and unexpected. It challenges me to break old patterns and to move in ways that I never have before. It has helped me learn how to show different emotions through my body," states Momo.

Come see Momo and the rest of our student company perform at Madeline Stands Tall, May 12th.  Tickets start at $10!

You can also help support BNC by sponsoring one of our scholarship students.  To learn more about this opportunity email BNC's Executive Director, Christin Crampton Day, ccday@bncdance.com.

2011 – 2012 Student Company

Posted on: September 1st, 2011 by The Long Family

This year, Student Company auditions were held on Saturday, August 13th. Eligible students in levels E/F/G are able to participate. This year, we have 21 students participating! They will undoubtedly have a great season with so many students involved.

Their first order of business? Hair and makeup training!

DENVER -- On Saturday, May 14, 2011, The School of Ballet Nouveau Colorado’s (BNC) Student Company presents their end of year production, a contemporary series featuring the famed Ballets Russes ballet Prince Igor, at Pinnacle Charter School’s Performing Arts Complex at 1001 West 84th Ave. Broomfield resident, Jeremy Studinski, age 15, will dance the title role of Prince Igor. Studinski has studied with BNC for six years, and this summer he will study with the San Francisco Ballet School on scholarship.

Prince Igor, originally performed as an excerpt to the full-length Russian opera, was later choreographed as a stand-alone work by famed Ballets Russes Choreographer Michel Fokine and premiered in 1909 in Paris. It is based on the story of a Ukrainian ruler and his family who are faced with the challenges inherent to love and war. BNC’s production of Prince Igor was staged by Cristina Munro, artistic director of Corpus Christi Ballet in Corpus Christi, Tex.

The performance will also highlight choreography by BNC Associate Artistic Director Dawn Fay and two of BNC's professional company artists, Colorado native Sarah Tallman and Damien Patterson.

Fay said, “I have enjoyed the process of working with these young artists and watching them develop. Their fresh, youthful, enthusiastic spirits became the inspiration for my piece entitled, gamin, gamine.” Fay’s work, a playful neo-classical ballet, will feature a pas de deux danced by Studinski and Momo Sakai.  Sakai, age 13 from Superior, danced the role of Clara in BNC’s 2010 production of The Nutcracker and began dancing with BNC when she was three years old.

Tallman's work is inspired by Charlie Brown’s pals, Lucy and Schroeder, from the comic strip Peanuts. "It is a privilege to work with the Student Company. It is amazing to see how the students have developed through the process of creating this piece, and to have the opportunity to be part of their development is so rewarding," said Tallman.

Patterson’s work, set to jazzy tunes by Aretha Franklin, takes place in a summer street scene while teenagers play and socialize. The piece reflects on the cycle of time and reflects on the similarities youth today have with the youth of the past. The piece features a solo danced by Lafayette resident Frances Purcell, age 14, who has studied with BNC since she was five years old.

BNC’s Student Company is comprised of 14 dancers, ages 12-19, many of whom reside in Boulder and Broomfield County. These aspiring young artists study dance for over 20-25 hours per week, including classical ballet, contemporary ballet, modern and jazz. They have been preparing for this production since August, in addition to participating in BNC’s The Nutcracker and community performances.

“It is a great honor to work with such devoted students,“ remarked School Director Julia Wilkinson Manley. “They are extraordinary students with great passion and dedication to their craft, and the result is remarkable. Putting together a full evening of dance takes an enormous amount of dedication and diligence, and the students of The School of BNC’s Student Company demonstrate the heart and devotion needed.”
